At the moment I'm reading a book from Rupert Sheldrake. He really wrote some interesting things. And that's what this illustration is inspired by. This is about a man with an amputated finger which he preserved in a pot in a heated cellar. One day he felt a dreadful cold in his absent finger. The doctor told the man to take a look at the pot. So what appeared: the window near the pot in the cellar had been broken. As soon as the finger was taken to a warm place the pain in his missing finger disappeared.
This tells me that things that were once connected to each other continue to influence each other on a distance even after the material contact has been broken. Well anyway, this is what can happen when bodyparts cannot be stitched together again.

Seems like I´ve been suffering from insomnia and a paintersblock lately and I can tell you that´s a bad combination. But after a few weeks off and a short sabbatical in beautiful Wales I couldn´t find any excuses anymore not to come up with something new.

For creating this image I used some images and new techniques from the amazing book Creative Photoshop from Derek Lea.

Juggling Black Widow

This was actually my second idea when I thought of juggle. The first thought that came up to me was two big guys in a circus juggling with a dwarfish person but I thought that might be a little too harsh so I chose for The Black Widow juggling with her husband. I find it really fascinating that after having intercourse the female attacks the male and often kills him. Sounds like a good deal to me:)

I once read that Israelian researchers found out that the poison of The Black Widow can be useful in the treatment of sexual impotence. Hmmm...quite orthodox I think...

The theme I spy made me think about a program I once saw on TV about Trepanation. People let voluntary drill a hole in their brainpan (in my case of interpretation the forehead)because they believed that it would stimulate the less used brainparts. And were convinced of getting a higher level of consciousness. I wondered if I could spy inside someone's head by looking into the hole.

Zo en nu weer in het Nederlands. Het stoort mij de laatste tijd op Illustration Friday dat alles om het zo te noemen 'cute' moet zijn. Tenminste bij mij rijst het steeds minder vage besef dat deze het hoogst scoren op de IF-markt. Misschien moet ik toch overwegen me aan te melden voor Illustration Friday Night. Zo toch fijn; heb ik even mijn ongenoegen kunnen spuien. Er is toch geen hond die dit leest!

In Holland we have the predicate 'A Hero On Socks' wich is actually everything what a hero is not. Not a prince on a white horse not a saviour. A hero on socks is somebody who presents oneself to be brave but in real-life wants to escape as fast as possible. And without shoes you're able to run faster;)
Now I've never believed in Princes on White Horses as I know them from all those fairytales. From the moment I read in The Little Mermaid : ''And the prince liked her so much that she was allowed to sleep on the doormat...'' (maybe it was a bad translation, I don't know) I began to doubt the existence of heroes and princes on white horses.

My first ever bought album in the 80's was 'Off The Wall' from Michael Jackson. Then I went through this phase that I would like to be reminded of as less as possible...
I digged up this picture from my parents attic, which I drew in The Late Eighties when I was 15 years old. I've never had an outstanding talent for drawing noses but I think I made this one after his second nosejob ;)

Sometimes, or actually most of the time, I tend to get very detuned by environmental buzzes as I call them. Like noisy people, somebody ring my bell when I'm reading a book(also when I'm not reading a book). Even a buzzing fridge can freak me out sometimes. I think I go and move from Rotterdam to the country.
Hmmmm...seems like I'm having my 'The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence'-mood again.

I really wanted to make something more cheerful but I ended up with this. Well it must be my mood. If anyone has recommendations for me they're welcome;
after a friend of mine said my two-weeks-ago mosquito was miserably photoshopped. I'm still learning don't be too harsh on me;)
P.S: Did I forget to tell that she also found my mosquito was great? Only miserably photoshopped? I find it hard to admit but she was actually right on that one...

I've been wondering if scientists are able to let an ear grow on a mouse then why they haven't already genetically manipulated a mosquito that doesn't like to drink blood? THAT would be useful. So I invented one myself. This is a friendly kind of mosquito that likes to drink chocolatemilk. I called him chocquito.

I had to think of magicians and how they always let everything go up in smoke. So here's the famous Houdin, the father of modern magic. Maybe I should have choosen the censored version without any blood so I probably get more comments this time but I didn't :)

Note: I'm a vegetarian, eating preponderant biological and I'm against any harm or abuse of helpless animals(may any of you get the wrong idea about me)

There used to live a bat in a ramshackle house in front of me but since the house has been renovated I miss him. I guess he didn't like to be bothered by human. Sometimes I do think his ghost is still flying his nightly jaunts in my backyard...
This is not exactly what I had in mind. I made a birdhouse into a lamp/ghostbathouse and painted the bat hanging under the house with glow-in-the-dark paint so that when the light is turned off you can still see a 'ghost' glowing. But nothing glowed after I took a picture. I couldn't get the glow-in-the-dark effect on camera :(
So I photoshopped my bat a bit et voilà.

I had to look up the word "smitten" in my dictionary and it gave different kind of definitions. I found the paraphrase -Affected by something overwhelming- the most beautiful one. The picture is based on a reoccurrent dream I was having when I was 7 or 8 years old. In that dream I always used to walk in a dim wood when I suddenly saw an owl in a tree and at that moment I felt a painful thrust in my back as I was struck by a flash of lightning. I still don't know wat it was telling me but I've been smitten by it for years.

Sacrifice

I had to make a big sacrifice to make this picture, because I had too little time this week actually. Though I still wanted to make something. Therefore I had to sacrifice one night of sleep. And my nightrest is kind of sacred to me. At the moment I wished I had a tool that prevents my eyelids from falling down and makes my mouth able to talk.

This one is based on a painting I made earlier of my red cat. He's actually quite sturdy but he's so scared of rain and thunderstorms that he tries to hide under and behind anything he can find.
